Operation
Buford Cleanup in Atlanta leads to Arrest of Seven Cocaine Distributors
As a result of "Operation Buford Cleanup" in Atlanta, Georgia,
seven residents were indicted this week by a federal grand jury
for an alleged conspiracy to distribute crack-cocaine.
"Apparently these people are the main distributors of crack-cocaine
in the area" said Dan Huggins, spokesman for the Gwinnet Police.
This organization of individuals allegedly was controlling the crack
distribution for an area that extended from Gwinnet County into
parts of Atlanta and Gainesville.
According to DEA officials these arrests are expected to have a
huge impact in the initial area. "Crack-cocaine takes a very serious
toll on our communities" said W. Michael Fergason, a DEA Special
Agent. Crack-cocaine is the rock form of the stimulant cocaine that
is smoked. It has a very alluring and powerful effect, which is
also awesomely addicting.
Smoking crack produces intense and immediate effects similar to
intravenous injection. Following indictment on the charges, the
defendants made preliminary court appearances and are now awaiting
trial. "This is a significant development in the war on drugs" says
Huggins.
